PLEX FOR CARDS
PROGRAM AMAZING SUCCESS
Yesterday, within 64 seconds of the first redemption going through, all 100 of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 graphics cards available in the PLEX for Graphics Cards program were sold out.
The PLEX for Graphics Cards program allowed players to exchange 20 PLEX units for an EVGA GeForce GTX 560 video card, and have it shipped to their home. Full details can be read in this blog.
As first described during the CCP Presents Keynote at EVE Fanfest
2012, the joint program with Nvidia and CCP shattered all expectations in
terms of player demand.
While certainly a unique and an amazing offer for EVE Online players, allowing
them to trade virtual goods for real world hardware (and undoubtedly making
the already beautiful EVE Online look even better on their computer screens
in the process), this isn't the first "real world" use of PLEX.
EVE players have generously donated tens of thousands of USD (via reverse-redeeming PLEX with the help of CCP) to numerous charities in multiple player-driven "PLEX for Good" campaigns which have gone towards flood relief in Pakistan, earthquake relief in Haiti and tsunami relief in Japan. PLEX was also accepted as a form of payment for EVE Fanfest passes, as well as access to the HD video stream of the event itself (an SD stream was made available for free and videos of the event can be found here).
PLEX (or Pilot's License Extension), originally purchased from CCP via account management, is an in-game item in EVE Online that can be bought and sold on any of 66 regional markets or traded in the contracts system for in-game currency (ISK). It represents one month of game time and can be applied to any account that has it in a character's inventory.
In essence, PLEX is a mechanism that allows players with enough in-game wealth to play "for free" by trading with another player who has bought PLEX from CCP, giving the original PLEX purchaser a good influx of in-game currency in the transaction, i.e. "time-rich" players working with "cash-rich" players for mutual benefit and profit, expanding EVE Online's subscription model to better serve it's players. It has also done wonders to combat Real Money Trading within EVE Online as a safe, effective method for players to turn real life currency into virtual currency.

CGE SERVICES ANNOUNCES DATES AND
LOCATION FOR CLASSIC GAMING EXPO 2012
The organizers of Classic Gaming Expo announced today that the 2012 Classic Gaming Expo will be held August 11 and 12 at the recently renovated Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show’s historic ties with Las Vegas, and specifically the Plaza Hotel, made it the obvious choice to play host to this year’s convention.
“We were surprised to hear from many of our attendees and celebrity guests alike that they miss the old-school charm of the Las Vegas Downtown area,” said Joe Santulli, co-organizer of Classic Gaming Expo. “We have a lot of history with the Plaza Hotel as they hosted our show from 1999 through 2003. After seeing the work and improvements that they did during their remodeling, there was no question that it was time to bring the show home to the Plaza.”
The Plaza Hotel is located at the top of the amazing Fremont Street Experience, home to numerous shops, casinos, concerts, and the amazing Viva Vision light display. The Plaza recently purchased the assets of the aborted Fontainebleau Hotel project and completely overhauled their rooms, shops, convention area and casino. According to Santulli, the vast amount of things to do in Las Vegas should appeal to those attendees that make Classic Gaming Expo part of their family vacations.
Over the past fourteen years, people from all over the world have attended Classic Gaming Expo to see the latest offerings from the various exhibitors, visited the world’s largest and most comprehensive video game museum, played classic and modern games, and met the luminaries of video gaming’s past and present. “The excitement and response to this year’s show has been astounding,” stated show founder, John Hardie. “One quick look at the list of vendors and celebrities on our web-site and you’ll see why 2012 is shaping up to be the greatest Classic Gaming Expo ever. In addition, our museum collection has grown immensely and will surely be one of the major highlights for every show attendee.”
Classic Gaming Expo is open to people of all ages with an interest in video games – both classic and modern. Information about ticketing, attendance and past events is available at www.cgexpo.com.

Commando Kiwi Takes Top Honours in
Make Something Unreal Live with ‘The Warlock of Firetop Mountain: Lost
Chapters'
Epic Games, Inc. and Train2Game announce that Commando Kiwi, developer of “The Warlock of Firetop Mountain: Lost Chapters,” is the winner of Make Something Unreal Live, an unprecedented game development competition that concluded today at the Gadget Show Live. Four teams presented their new iOS games based on individual books in the “Fighting Fantasy” series to the franchise’s esteemed creators, Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone OBE, and the duo determined that Commando Kiwi’s fresh twist on the third-person adventure genre makes the best use of the property and exhibits the most outstanding commercial potential. The studio’s winnings include a full source Unreal Engine 3 license for iOS that may be applied to a future project as well as a holiday at the luxurious AquaCity water park and resort in Poprad, Slovakia.
All four iOS games were publicly debuted this week and are primed
for release on the App Store in the coming weeks through a new publishing
deal with AppyNation.
Teams competing in Make Something Unreal Live have been developing their games
since advancing in the Train2Game
and Epic Game Jam last November. Five months of development went into
overdrive this week at the Gadget Show Live, where students presented projects
twice daily to industry legends, implemented changes based on expert critiques
at a rapid pace and submitted their near-final games for today’s judging.
By using the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free edition of Epic’s award-winning Unreal Engine 3 technology, all four teams, whose members are enrolled in Train2Game’s blended learning courses, are poised to publish their games on the App Store under standard UDK licensing terms. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Prince’s Trust.
“Commando Kiwi really captured the essence of ‘The Warlock of Firetop Mountain’ with great gameplay and visuals,” said “Fighting Fantasy” author and co-creator, Ian Livingstone. “It’s remarkable what these student teams were able to produce working remotely for such a short period of time using UDK. Although only one of the teams has won this amazing prize, the experience students have gained is invaluable and I fully expect to see many of them working in the video games industry. We look forward to playing these games, and Steve and I are sure that Fighting Fantasy fans everywhere will really enjoy these new interactive experiences based on the books."
“I’m just dead proud of my team. They’ve worked really hard and this competition has changed our lives forever,” said Jonny Robinson, producer of Commando Kiwi and team captain for Make Something Unreal Live.
“The quality of the games produced for the Make Something Unreal Live competition at Gadget Show Live is a testament to the teaching that the students have received on Train2Game courses,” said Myra Smallman, course director, Train2Game. “The competitive process that they have been through should give them a glimpse of what it’s like to work in a professional studio and the experience should go towards giving them the skills to gain employment in the games industry.”
Epic Games European Territory Manager and Make Something Unreal Live mentor Mike Gamble summed up today’s dramatic conclusion to the competition. "Priming the next generation of game developers benefits the industry as a whole. This competition may be over but the journey for four new studios has only begun."

NIKITA ONLINE: Russian Gamers Grew Up and Started
to Earn Money but not to Learn English
For the first time NIKITA ONLINE publishes the results of the regular survey conducted on the audience of the GameXP entertainment web-portal (http://gamexp.ru) which unites users of all NIKITA ONLINE’s projects. The survey performed in March 2012 focused on analysis of socio-demography and consumer behavior of the gamers.
The respondent sample was formed on the basis of population of 7 million, thus its results in many respects might be applied not only to NIKITA ONLINE’s users but to all Russian users of online games.
Due to the data received by the means of electronic questionnaire the leading age cohort is represented by a people above 19 years old — there are 78% of them. “Employee/Specialist” cohort increased by 8% compared to the previous year and now makes up 30% of the users population. Last year the biggest group was students — today their share is 24%.
Thus excluding “Student”, “Unemployed” and “Housewife” segments (34% totally) the number of the users with their own source of income is 66%. Actually this percentage can be higher because a certain amount of students have a job as well. The company’s integral ARPU and ARPPU growth in 2011 definitely upholds this data.
The analysis of consumer behavior conducted in the framework of the survey revealed a number of characteristics correlating with socio-demographic statics. Thus, for instance, the majority of users (49%) spend from 11 up to 30 hours on gaming weekly. This amount of playing time usually implies short but regular evening game sessions preferred by employed users; 18% of users buy bonuses in freemium games and 53% don’t mind paying for content.
At the same time the percentage of users who speak English well enough to play original versions of the games remains low — some 82% users don’t speak English at all or have significant difficulties with it.
Sergey Kolesov, Corporate Communications Director for NIKITA ONLINE, comments on the results of the survey: “Free-to-play model totally works for Russian users and its potential is still far from full realization here. Age, occupation, preferences of the audience change, but above all is attitude and it changes too. People are becoming more and more accustomed to the thought it’s alright to pay for premium game content. The results of our survey build a generalized psychographic profile of more than 7 million-strong audience. It practically means that the survey data can be used to describe Russian online gamers in whole.”
The presentation of GameXP audience survey results is available on the official NIKITA ONLINE’s site: http://www.nikitaonline.ru/files/downloads/audience_survey_march2012_eng.pdf
